The “why are there so many readings?” sigh
Some weeks, Japanese feels like it is testing your patience on purpose.
Same kanji. Different reading. Different word.
But there is a pattern hiding in the folds, I promise.
Japanese Insights:
Kanji readings in human terms (why “so many readings” is not random)
The first time you meet kanji readings, it feels unfair.
Like: “I learned one symbol… why did it come with three pronunciations?”
But here is the gentle explanation:
Japanese borrowed writing from Chinese over a long time.
So kanji ended up with:
A “Chinese-ish” reading (onyomi)
A “Japanese word” reading (kunyomi)
And then real life added time, regions, and habit.
A practical way to survive this without going full textbook:
Stop trying to memorize every reading in isolation.
Learn readings through common words.
Treat each new word like a little folded unit.
Tiny examples to make it feel real:
上手（じょうず / jōzu） = skilled
上（うえ / ue） = up, above
下手（へた / heta） = unskilled
下（した / shita） = below, under
人気（にんき / ninki） = popularity
人（ひと / hito） = person

This week was a "strengthen every crease" kind of week.
We went through the dictionary and the website with fresh eyes and cleaned up a lot of the small stuff that adds up fast. Furigana rendering, layout quirks, general performance boosts so things load the way they should.
None of it is flashy. All of it is the difference between "this feels okay" and "this feels right."
The bigger project running alongside all of that: we are tagging every single concept in the dictionary into a category.
Grammar. Vocabulary. Kanji. Expressions. And more specific groupings inside those.
Why? Because eventually, this is how we tailor what you see to what you actually want to learn.
Whether you are learning Japanese to read manga raw, survive a med school rotation in Tokyo, or finally understand what the baseball commentators are yelling, your lesson content should feel like your lesson content.
We are building the map so the paths can be personal.
And then looking ahead: the next big push before launch (which is coming very soon) is Discord integrations and QA.
